Teacup agility

  • Jul. 4th, 2009 at 10:39 PM

Okay, yeah, teacup agility is just too cute for words. We hadn't been for a couple years, though that's not for lack of trying. Somehow the teacup thing has never caught on around here, which I just don't understand. There are certainly a lot of small agility dogs in our area, it's like Papillon Central around here, and that's the size dog that the whole organization is based around. I mean, it's quite amusing to run Fenwick in teacup, where he bounce jumps about everything, but it's really designed for, well, SMALL dogs.

It is quite fun, it's still agility but different enough to be novel. Okay, I wouldn't want to do it every weekend, but it's cool to do something different now and again. The trials are, well, small and very relaxed and really, REALLY cute. I mean, all the cute tiny equipment with the cute tiny dogs - I just want to SQUISH it all! There was a super adorable, spunky sheltie/rat terrier cross there I hadn't seen before - SQUISH (she liked to bark, naturally), and a boston that was bigger than Fenwick! So I don't know why there aren't more people down with the teacup agility, but hey, we enjoyed ourselves.

Fenwick just had his 2 standard runs today, which was plenty, especially considering how hot it was (94 degrees!).  Fenwick went outside to potty, play in the pool a little - that was it.  It was way too hot.  Still, the trial started at 10am and we were heading home by 2pm - no complaints.  Hopefully tomorrow will be cooler.

The big news of the day is that Fenwick actually did the stand on the table.  I had MEANT to work on that for the last couple weeks ... and never did.  So we did a little crash course today inbetween runs.  He can offer his "stand" (kicking his rear legs back) on cue pretty reliably just on the ground, but he thinks standing while on the table is what BAD DOGS do.  Fenwick really is a good dog at heart.

I was worried about the 18 inch weavepoles, but they just had six weaves and I'm pretty sure they weren't 18 inches, they seemed bigger.  Either way, Fenwick seemed okay with them, so that was cool.  Other than that, Fenwick can't really get up much speed to speak of in teacup - which is good, some of the angles and contact approaches were terrible.  Still, enjoyable overall - I love doing something different.

Superior Standard - Run 1 - Fenwick doesn't even want to sit on the table, which did not bode well for the 'stand'

Superior Standard - Run 2 - He sits, he stands, he qualifies (he takes out a tunnel)!

So back tomorrow for another round, should be fun.  I can't remember the last time I just had Fenwick at a trial, it's rather weird.  He just loves to play together, no matter what we're doing.  So much love for my Fenny.

Had a very low-key 4th of July at home, Tammy and crew came over for a swarm of dogs at our place.  London and I went out and watched the big fireworks in the sky around our house together.  Well, I watched the fireworks while London was facinated with an electrical cover he found - that dog has such an obsession with grates or covers on the ground, weirdo.  Still, nothing bothers London, he could care less about the booms and whistles.  A lovely night for sitting outside and watching the world explode.  Full moon too - bonus!

I find it funny that Bonkers (the 'scaredy-cat') doesn't find 7 dogs running amok around him to be scary at all

Okay, dorky picture of me, but very cute anyway - that's Fenwick, then Brisbee who is laying on Neko and Poco on my feet - everyone needs their own furry blanket

Nova showing off with her toy - a timeless classic for the ages

Brisbee feeling very zen sitting in Bruce's lap while he's on the computer

I have never seen teacup agility. I didnt realize the equipment was so much smaller/lower. That's funny. The jumps are closer so you have to be really quick with your crosses. Looked great and fun. Diana

It really is a lot of fun - though I'm pretty lucky, with that spacing Fenwick can't really get much speed, some of the smaller dogs you have to have seriously fast reflexes!

I would totally be at the teacup trial if it wasn't for this working for a living thing.

Which came first, the money or the trial? Oh, wait, I think it's the money. I guess you made the right choice then.

Sounds like you two had a fun day!

While Kirby is the right height for teacup agility, he definitely isn't the right size. I've seen the small equipment and thought he would probably squish it. And they are tight courses to negotiate the Mac truck through. :-)

I got Elmo through some teacup courses, any other (eligible) dog would have to be easier than that.

Haha - it would probably stand up to the monster that is Kirby ... but he might get stuck in the tunnel. ;-) I find it funny, some of the smaller border collies (17 in) are even technically eligible to run in TDAA - now that would be something to see.

Very nice videos of Teacup in action. Your handling seems smooth and unrushed, even with the tight spacing.

It's interesting that the wings are so tall relative to the height of the other equipment. In the first run, the beginning jumping sequence looks fairly normal, and then all of a sudden you become a giant handler towering over the Lilliputian A-frame.

The nice thing about doing crosses in teacup agility is that you really only need to get like 2 feet instead of 20. ;-)

I think one of our students is judging the teacup trial- lady named Michelle? She said she was out of town this weekend judging...

And wait a second- I thought your dogs didn't cuddle- that looks suspiciously like group couch cuddling- I think maybe you lie;-)

Oh yes, we know Michelle - she's been involved from the start in our area! I was very grateful the southern OR TDAA crew made this trial happen up here - very fun!

Oh, and there's a world of difference between just laying next to you and cuddling (and for the record, all my cats are excellent cuddlers!). Brisbee might kinda LOOK like he's cuddling, but he's just using me as a warm chair.

Wow, it's neat to see video. I knew the obstacles were smaller, but had no idea how close everything was. Very intersting. We finally have a club in Virginia that has held 2 trials, not sure if it will take off though.

I really do enjoy it, it's a totally different sort of challenge than you ever normally see. I wouldn't want to do it every weekend, but I enjoy the trials we have.

I just couldn't run in teacup agility as it would make me feel WAY too tall! But it is darn cute and certainly requires some quick responses!

It's the only organization I can pretend that Fenwick has mad fly 'distance' skills. ;-)
